MOHALI: India beat Pakistan by 29 runs on Wednesday to set-up a World Cup final against Sri Lanka in Mumbai on Saturday.

Pakistan, chasing 261 for victory, were dismissed for 231 in the face of a disciplined effort by India under the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium floodlights.

India’s 260 for nine, after winning the toss, was built around Sachin Tendulkar’s 85.

But they might have made considerably less had not the ‘Little Master’ been dropped four times in an innings that still left him one short of a hundred international hundreds.

Left-arm fast bowler Wahab Riaz led Pakistan’s attack with career-best figures of five for 46.

India’s victory meant they’d won all five of their World Cup matches against arch-rivals Pakistan and kept alive the 37-year-old Tendulkar’s dream of lifting the trophy for the first time in his illustrious career.

Brief scores
India 260-9 (Sachin Tendulkar 85; Wahab Riaz 5-46) v Pakistan 231 all out in 49.5 overs (Misbah-ul-Haq 56, Mohammad Hafeez 43)

India won by 29 runs.

Cricket: Sri Lanka beat New Zealand in World Cup.

Cricket: Sri Lanka beat New Zealand in World Cup.

ANGELO MATHEWS never doubted Sri Lanka would get over the line in yesterday’s World Cup semi-final against New Zealand.

The co-hosts appeared to be coasting into Saturday’s final, against either India or Pakistan in Mumbai, as Tillekeratne Dilshan (73) and captain Kumar Sangakkara (54) were sharing a second-wicket stand of 120 in pursuit of only 217.

But it all got a little too tight for comfort under the Premadasa Stadium lights after both those batsmen departed in quick succession and Sri Lanka lost four wickets for 25 runs.

It therefore fell to the big-hitting Mathews and Thilan Samaraweera to settle the nerves and finish the job with an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 35.

“I never had any doubt, because I always thought we were going to win,” said all-rounder Mathews, who had to bat with a runner after injuring his thigh while fielding.

He did admit, though, Sri Lanka had not quite bargained for a much closer finish than they had against England in last weekend’s quarter-final.

“It was getting to us, because the pressure was on. We had to pull something out of the bag,” Mathews told Sky Sports.

“I couldn’t ask for any more, doing it in the semi-finals.”

He appears optimistic his injury will not stop him taking part on Saturday.

“We’ll have to see how it is tomorrow, and rest it.”

Master off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan marked the last match of his record-breaking international career in his native country – the forthcoming final will be his swansong – by taking a wicket with his last ball.

Both Mathews and Sangakkara were delighted to pay tribute to their country’s most famous cricketer.

“He’s just a legend – the best spinner in the world,” said the former.

“He’s done a great job right through the tournament. All credit to him.”

Sangakkara added: “He is the icon of Sri Lanka – as a champion, a cricketer and a human being.”

Sri Lanka beat New Zealand in World cup 2011, Goes to Semi Final

New Zealand Vs Sri Lanka 38th match World Cup 2011 18 Mar Live

Muttiah Muralitharan

In what will be one of the more important games of the last week of the league stages of the ICC Cricket World Cup in Group A, Sri Lanka will play New Zealand. The game will be played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Things are interestingly poised in the points table despite both having qualified for the quarter-finals. If the New Zealand side can beat Sri Lanka in this game, they will either finish first or second in their group, which will mean that they will face the likes of Bangladesh or West Indies in the second round clash.

Click for Live Score Card of New Zealand Vs Sri Lanka

On the other hand, if Sri Lanka can beat New Zealand in the game, they will end second or third based on the result of the other game in the group, between Australia and Pakistan. This means that Sri Lanka, whether they win this game or no, cannot finish at the top of the Group A which will be a blow to their confidence.

However, the game should be interesting and could be evenly poised. The reason for this is that the match is not being played in Sri Lanka, where they have played all their games, but in a neutral venue at Mumbai. Now, logically, the Mumbai track should assist the Lankans more than the Kiwis, but it is not known for sure how will it behave in the night.

For one, there is a lot of heat and heavy humidity that will push the sides to the limit. Secondly, there is a small matter of the game being a day night encounter. What this will do is to allow the ball to swing and seam around like no other and that will mean that the team batting second could be looking at issues. The other other problem for the team bowling second is that given the temperatures, dew could be of a concern and that is the reason why it will be difficult to decide what the captain would do - bat or bowl.

Sri Lanka will hope that they bowl a little better than they have in the tournament - given that the likes of Muttiah Muralitharan and the other spinners have not had the best of chances to practice.

On the other hand, New Zealand will also want to have their pace bowlers do their best to get the better of the opponents. How well they bat, however, will be the key.

World Cup - Pakistan crush insipid West Indies, Pakistan now in Semi Final World Cup 2011

Pakistan trounced a dismal West Indies by 10 wickets to reach the World Cup semi-finals in emphatic fashion in Dhaka. ... Cricket-Pakistan beat West Indies by 10 wickets, World Cup - Pakistan crush insipid West Indies, Pakistan now in Semi Final World Cup 2011.

Pakistan beat West Indies by 10 wickets, enter semis

23 March 2011
Press Trust of India
MIRPUR, 23 MARCH: Captain Shahid Afridi scalped four wickets and Mohammad Hafeez excelled with an all-round display as Pakistan spanked a spineless West Indies by 10 wickets to storm in the semifinal of the cricket World Cup here today.
Pakistan bundled out the Caribbeans for a paltry 112 in just 43.3 overs and then overhauled the target with 29.1 overs to spare in a hugely-lopsided quarterfinal clash at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium.

Chasing just 113 to win, Mohammad Hafeez (61) and Kamran Akmal (47) toyed with the West Indies attack and stitched a 125-ball 113-run opening partnership to wrap up the match very easily and move into the semi-finals after a gap of 12 years.
The 1992 Champions Pakistan will now face the winner of the second quarterfinal between India and Australia at Ahmedabad in the semifinals.
Everything went right for Pakistan today, which also happens to be their national day, as Afridi's men didn't put a foot wrong after West Indies skipper Darren Sammy won the toss and sent them to field.

Hafeez's two early wickets pushed West Indies on the backfoot right at the start of their innings and then Afridi picked four for 30 to dismiss two-time champions West Indies for their third lowest World Cup total.

Hafeez also shone with the bat and provided a blistering start to Pakistan's runchase, clubbing a couple of fours off Kemar Roach in the very first over.
Hafeez picked up another boundary in the second over off Ravi Rampaul after his opening partner Kamran Akmal sent him across the rope in the second delivery.
Kamran blasted Roach for another four in the next over when his uppish cut kissed Kieron Pollard's fingers at point before racing to the boundary. The wicketkeeper-batsman picked up another four off the pacer in his next over.

Spinner Devendra Bishoo and skipper Darren Sammy tried to put the break and bowled two maiden overs but Hafeez blasted a couple of fours off the former in his second over to take Pakistan across the 50-mark in eight overs.

Hafeez didn't relent a bit and kept punishing the bowlers with utter disdain. He clipped one off the pad and then lifted one over midwicket, before sending Bishoo across the point boundary to race towards his half-century.

In the 17th over, Hafeez picked up another four off Rampaul to notch up the eighth half-century of his career off just 55 balls and then took Pakistan across the 100-mark in the 20th over. Kamran too matched his partner shot by shot and remained unbeaten on 47 with the help of seven fours.

Earlier, West Indies skipper Darren Sammy's decision to bat first after winning the toss backfired badly as they were reduced to 16 for three by the sixth over, with the dangerous Chris Gayle back in the pavilion.

Spearhead Gul gave Pakistan a dream start when he had Gayle caught at mid-off by none other than the skipper himself.

If losing Gayle so early was not bad enough, West Indies were dealt another body blow as the left-hander's opening partner, Devon Smith, was trapped in front by Hafeez.

Hafeez was at the thick of things again when he had Darren Bravo caught plumb in front.

West Indies looked completely out of sorts against the guile and variation of the opposition bowlers, especially Hafeez, who picked up two wickets while conceding just 12 runs in his first spell of eight overs, which also had three maidens.
Afridi seemed pro-active in his approach and was looking for wickets at all costs,
and at all times.

The skipper was in no mood to let go of the early advantage and therefore replaced first-change bowler Wahab Riaz after the left-arm seamer went wicket-less in his first three overs.

Afridi's move paid dividends as he broke the 42-run partnership between Ramnaresh Sarwan (24) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (44 not out), the biggest of the innings.
Sarwan and Chanderpaul tried to steady the ship with a dodgy stand, but the duo's effort proved to be insufficient in the prevailing circumstances.
Sarwan, while trying to break the shackles after consuming 68 deliveries, found Umar Akmal at Gully, giving Afridi his first wicket of the match, and 18th of the tournament.

Sarwan always looked in trouble against the Pakistani skipper and the leg-spinner could have had the West Indian had Gul not dropped an easy chance at widish long-off in his second over.

Bowling his fast, attacking leg-spinners to deadly effect, Afridi then had Kieron Pollard caught behind and followed that up with the wicket of Devon Thomas in the next ball.

Yuvraj stars as India finish second, India beat West Indies, world cup 2011

India 268 (Yuvraj 113, Kohli 59, Rampaul 5-51) beat West Indies 188 (Smith 81, Sarwan 39, Zaheer 3-26) by 80 runs

Zaheer Khan exults after bowling Devon Smith, India v West Indies, Group B, World Cup 2011, March 20, 2011

Oh West Indies, they have done it again. For the second match in a row they had a chase all wrapped up but some desperate inspiration from Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh and some mindless cricket from the batsmen who followed Devon Smith ensured that West Indies remained without a win over a Test side other than Bangladesh since June 2009. With Smith playing as well as he has ever played, West Indies almost mocked India for the first 27 overs, getting up to 146 for 2 without a care in the world. Then came a maiden by Harbhajan and a wicked Zaheer slower ball to remove Smith, and West Indies lost the last eight wickets for 34.

That collapse outdid India's own - 7 for 50 - that had threatened to undo Yuvraj Singh's century on a track whose bounce West Indies and Ravi Rampaul exploited, but not to the fullest. Rampaul, the hero of West Indies' last win against a major side, took his first five-for in ODIs on his World Cup debut to hurt the start, the middle and the end of the Indian innings. However, West Indies' insistence on opening the bowling with Sulieman Benn despite the helpful track, and the obvious plan of trying to bounce India out meant they couldn't capitalise on a first over that claimed Sachin Tendulkar. Then there was Yuvraj, with his maiden World Cup century, fighting dehydration, vomiting on the field, and then coming back to take two wickets.

The game might have ended in a whimper, but it began explosively. As they successfully did in the last two World Twenty20s, West Indies came out with bouncers for India. Inside the first 11 overs, two deliveries bounced over the keeper's head for byes, two batsmen got out to deliveries dug in short, one was dropped off another short delivery, but Benn went for 21 off his three overs to ease the pressure. To make matters worse Darren Sammy dropped Yuvraj twice, chances not easy but not impossible, at 9 and 13.

Working with Yuvraj was Virat Kohli, for whom it was almost a homecoming to bat at No. 3 in the absence of the injured Virender Sehwag. In familiar environs of not having to score at a strike-rate of 150, Kohli did just what was required on a tough pitch after a tough start, scoring 59 off 76, letting Yuvraj take the majority of the strike in a 122-run partnership, after the two had come together at 51 for 2.

Even after Yuvraj was reprieved twice, the bouncers still kept coming, the odd ball still misbehaved - especially for the left-hand batsman. He got dehydrated and threw up but nothing seemed to be able to stop the Yuvraj specials in between, shots that kept the scoring rate up in the middle overs. Kohli was smart too: he had played 21 deliveries when Yuvraj came to join him, but so good was the strike manipulation that Yuvraj had played 12 more deliveries than him by the time their partnership ended.

Quarter-final line-up

* Pakistan v West Indies in Dhaka on 23 March
* Australia v India in Ahmedabad on 24 March
* New Zealand v South Africa in Dhaka on 25 March
* Sri Lanka v England in Colombo on 26 March
* The winner of the third quarter-final will play the winner of the fourth in the semi-finals in Colombo on 29 March, while the other semi-final will be played in Mohali on March 30

During the partnership, Yuvraj pulled over midwicket, cover-drove for fours along the ground, swept the legspin of Devendra Bishoo, and on-drove Sammy over long-on for a majestic six. It was one of those days when Yuvraj was feeling it, one of those days when he plays one level above the game around him. His mates, though, managed to engineer another collapse from 218 for 3 in the 42nd over.

Buoyed by that good finish with the ball, West Indies came out positive. As Rampaul stood up in the absence of the unwell Kemar Roach, so Smith did in place of the injured Chris Gayle. He cut furiously - almost every bowler got a taste of his trademark shot - he picked singles straight to infielders, doubles straight to those in the deep. However, R Ashwin, who got his World Cup debut at long last, was difficult to hit with the new ball. He used his carrom ball to remove the potentially explosive Kirk Edwards.

Still Smith and Darren Bravo first, and Smith and Ramnaresh Sarwan thereafter kept knocking off the runs calmly. The running between the wickets, and then the odd boundary to break a string of dots, remained a feature. The panic and rush that characterised their effort against England was conspicuous in its absence. With Smith scoring at will, and West Indies needing just 123 in the last 23 overs, only West Indies stood in the way of West Indies.

Turned out they needed a bit of help from India to kickstart the collapse. It came through a maiden from Harbhajan, who came back remarkably after an uninspiring spell of four overs for 23 with the new ball. Harbhajan and Munaf Patel put together a spell of 19 balls for just eight runs before Zaheer was called upon to provide the exclamation mark.

And how he did, with his new knuckle slower ball, where the middle finger doesn't hold the ball tightly, thus taking the pace off without giving any indication to those who are watching from the front. With that slower ball, he removed Smith's off stump after a virtually faultless innings. After that, the procession began. Kieron Pollard holed out to long-on at the first sight of pressure, Sammy was sold down the river by Sarwan, Devon Thomas and Andre Russell fell to the wiles of Yuvraj, and it was all over.

The way West Indies and India collapsed, conspiracy theorists will waste no time in suggesting that both teams wanted to avoid Australia in the quarter-final. As it turned out, West Indies finished fourth in Group B, thus getting Group A leaders Pakistan in Dhaka. And India renew hostilities with Australia in Ahmedabad.

Cricket World Cup - England beat the West Indies and keep their hopes alive in Chennai

Cricket World Cup 2011 - England beat the West Indies and keep their hopes alive in Chennai

Cricket World Cup - England beat the West Indies

Let's face it – you have to be an optimist to support England in the World Cup!

The pessimists were having their bags packed and booking a flight back to Heathrow in Chennai when they were, once again, within an ace of losing to the West Indies and going out of the competition.

But England don't do winning – nor losing- simply. Andrew Strauss and his team, reduced through injuries and shattered after their ridiculous schedule, would have been entitled to shrug their shoulders, phoned their wives and told them they were on their way back.

Having scrambled to a below par total of 243 they , once more, stood on the brink of defeat with the Windies 222 for 6 with lots of overs to spare and judging by the grins on the Caribbean faces there was only going to be one winner and they weren't England .

But four wickets for three runs turned the game on its head and the joy of the English players showed that they not only cared but were not going to give away their place in the quarter finals easily – even after those narrow defeats by the Irish and one of the three hosts, Bangladesh.

The win means England are through to the quarter-finals unless Bangladesh beat South Africa and the West Indies get at least a point against India. Both results would have to go against England.

For the sixth match in succession, England were involved in a rollercoaster of a contest, which swung back and forth right through to the end.

Having reduced the Windies to 150-6, they were favourites to win the match, only for Ramnaresh Sarwan and Andre Russell to take the game away from them in a partnership of 72.

Nothing was going right as Trott was adjudged to have brushed the boundary rope with his sleeve as he took a magnificent catch on the boundary even though television replays could never quite catch the moment when he touched.

Then an umpiring decision went against them and an appeal revealed that the ball would have just taken the bails off the middle stump.

But did heads drop? No they did not, even though some at home might have decided to take the dog for a walk after those two west backs.

But after Russell fell leg before wicket for 49 to give man-of-the-match James Tredwell his fourth wicket, the Caribbean side crumbled in calamitous and, sadly, typical fashion.

Two overs later, Graeme Swann (3-36) had Sarwan caught at short leg by Ian Bell and Kemar Roach holed out to a staggering Chris Tremlett catch in the deep.

A breathless passage of play was complete when the Windies' final pair attempted a risky second run and Sulieman Benn was run out after a fine throw from Trott to spark riotous celebrations in the England camp.

Captain Andrew Strauss and his men now face a nervous weekend, with Bangladesh facing the Proteas in Dhaka on Saturday and the Windies rounding off the group stage against India in Chennai.

But assuming at least one of those games goes the way of India or South Africa; England will be two victories away from the World Cup final.

England's batting performance was a patchy affair, featuring an aggressive knock of 47 from Trott, a middle order collapse, and a cameo from Luke Wright who, like Tremlett, was playing his first game as James Anderson and Paul Collingwood were rested and
Ajmal Shahzad was ruled out through injury for the rest of the tournament.

It was Wright who gave England the lift they needed with a measured 44 off 57 balls, only for a momentary rush of blood to the head rush costing him his wicket as he was caught on the boundary trying to heave new boy Bishoo for six.

As ever, the Windies looked to Gayle to kick-start their innings and the tall left-hander did not disappoint, as he smashed 36 runs off two overs from Tim Bresnan and Tremlett to catapult his team to 50-0 off five overs.

The onslaught prompted a rethink from Strauss, who threw the ball to off-spinner Tredwell to join Swann in the attack. The plan came off as Tredwell trapped Gayle in front of his stumps with his fifth ball.

Tredwell picked up the wicket of Smith in the next over but Windies skipper Darren Sammy, who promoted himself to number three, picked up where Gayle left off to fire the Windies to 78-2 after 10 overs.

Sammy brought up the hundred with his third six over long-on but his innings came to an end with the first ball after the drinks break as he chopped a regulation delivery from Bopara on to his stumps.

Devon Thomas fell in similar fashion to bring danger man Kieron Pollard to the crease.

After a watchful start, the stocky Trinidadian smashed Bresnan over mid-on for four and Swann for six over midwicket. But just when he was looking dangerous, Swann fizzed through a quicker delivery that accounted for Pollard lbw for 24.

With the Windies' long and inexperienced tail exposed, England looked odds-on for victory but Russell's fearless hitting and Sarwan's cool head turned things around.

However, Tredwell and Swann ensured there was one final twist in England's latest drama. Can the heart stand many more? Of course, we can if England can keep the ship afloat.

Three half centuries scored from South African side. HM Amla, AB de Villiers and JP Duminy scored half centuries. South Africa managed to reach the total of 289 runs. They set 290 runs target to India.

India was hot favorite to win the match after winning test match and T-20 series had lost the first ODI encounter against South Africa. Zaheer Khan, Patel and Sharma took two wickets each but could not contain South African batsmen from scoring runs.

Indian start for the run chase was not good. They lost both openers for just 13 runs. The middle order didn’t prove solid before South African bowling attack. V Kholi scored hard half century. Raina scored 32 runs. There were no Indian batsmen who stayed on the wicket for long time. Captain MS Dhoni was run out on 25 runs.

Bangladesh Upset England In Cricket World Cup 2011.

Bangladesh players celebrate the dismissal of Ireland's Joyce during their ICC Cricket World Cup group B match in Dhaka

Bangladesh which is not considered a strong team played so well tonight and to the surprise and amazement of the spectators and everyone watching the game, they beat England, definitely considered a stronger team.

England batted first and made a score of 225 for all out in the 50 overs.

Then it was Bangladesh's turn to play. All watching thought England would get the players wearing red and green out fast but they were sadly mistaken! No one thought how there would be a change of events and the tables would turn.

As for me,I somehow knew that Bangladesh would win.I was on the phone from Islamabad talking to my son in Karachi and insisting that my sixth sense told me I was right. He laughed at my excitement when I declared,'After all Bangladesh was once East Pakistan!'I'm sure they'll win.I want them to win!'

Men,women and children in the crowd were seen praying for their home team and I hoped the two lads batting would stay on the ground and maintain their partnership.

In the last 5 overs the Bangladeshi boys batted very well and scored 4s one after the other.

At last they were victorious and made 227 for 8 and won by 2 wickets.

My son rang up and was astonished at the turn of events but I knew that someone's prayers had been answered.

Ireland v West Indies, World Cup 2011, Ireland slip at crucial moments

The Ireland story: they held kept their grip on the game both while fielding to begin with and later while chasing the target, before control slipped away at the most crucial moments. In the morning, for 35 overs, Ireland had put West Indies under house arrest till the pirate from Trinidad - Kieron Pollard - walked in, imposed himself and forced a jailbreak.

Then, even with half their batsmen back in the dressing room with nine overs and 79 runs to go and a batting Powerplay in hand, Gary Wilson raised hopes of a victory having compiled an impressive fifty. Suddenly, he was ruled out in dubious fashion. Ireland got distracted and the Shamrock was crushed.

It was a case of so near yet so far. Even the absence of Trent Johnson, who failed to recover from a knee injury, had not deterred the Irish. Boyd Rankin had a new companion with which to share the new ball in Alex Cusack. With an agile field providing ample support both men bowled a tight line and a perfect length.

Surprisingly the West Indies opening pair of Devon Smith and Shivnaraine Chanderpaul seemed like they were carrying putters instead of bats in hand as they carefully avoided playing any big strokes. Their circumspection only helped Ireland who cashed in. After 15 overs West Indies had not lost a wicket but a score of just 50 seemed a tad too slow.

Surprisingly the greenish tinge on the pitch had predicted a lot of seam movement and some early wickets for the fast bowlers. The perceived dawn raid by the fast men never came. Far from being dejected, the Ireland bowlers kept on leveraging the advantage. After 24 overs West Indies were on a far from promising 89. Next over Kevin O'Brien picked up two wickets. By the time the ball was replaced Ireland seemed in a dominant position at 138 for 3.

To get out of the hole they had dug themselves in, the pair of Smith and Kieron Pollard opted for the batting Powerplay immediately. And that is where Ireland faltered for the first time. George Dockrell, the left-arm spinner, had been introduced past the 30-over mark, but he had already stamped his authority by dismissing Ramnaresh Sarwan in his second over. In the following over he kept Pollard under check, giving only five runs.

But for some unknown and unexplained reason he was removed. Thereafter Pollard established himself and snatched the game away from Ireland - 57 runs came in those five overs when the field was in. West Indies smacked 133 runs off the final 15 overs. Dockrell remained busy on the ropes, fetching the ball instead of delivering it.

"I have no complaints for the boys. They bowled pretty well. Coming out in the first 15 overs I know we did not pick up any wickets but they were going at less than three [an over]. That was a great effort. We picked up momentum there. We picked wickets at crucial times. But Kieron Pollard came in and played a great knock and it is hard to defend when he plays like that. We knew what power they had in the middle order and just had to try and contain them. You also have to give credit to Devon Smith the way he played. He did not find it easy to start with but he caught up coming forward in the middle overs," William Porterfield, the Ireland captain said.

He reckoned Ireland were still in the contest while they discussed the gameplan for the chase. "When we came out at half-time we it was a par score and very, very chaseable," he said. At the halfway stage Ed Joyce and Wilson had just started their union. Joyce, who had a sum of 52 runs in the previous three matches, had got off to the most fluent starts with two graceful cover drives as soon as he walked in. He continued to regale the senses with his wristy drives. Wilson was an able partner and both men steadily built a platform. Their settled minds caused distress for Darren Sammy, who was busy changing fields and swapping bowlers.

Even when Joyce left, bowled round the legs by Andre Russell, Wilson had immediately moved into a commanding position to take control. But just like he had taken the pressure off Joyce, he needed a man to stand by him. Kevin O'Brien disappointed and went for the big shots straightway and vanished quickly. Ireland could not bring the spirit of their Bangalore evenings to Mohali. Luck deserted the Irish today as Wilson perished to a questionable umpiring decision.

"We got ourselves into a pretty good position going into the last ten overs. The wicket changed a lot more than we maybe expected. It kept low and got slightly harder. We lost a few wickets at pretty crucial times. Niall and Ed partnership started the rebuilding and then Gary came and along with Ed they were going going pretty strongly till we lost a couple of wickets in the 40th over which delayed the batting Powerplay slightly which kind of set us back," was Porterfield's analysis.

Sri Lanka skipper praises teammates, Srilanka beat Zimbabwe, cricket world cup 2011

Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara praised teammate Tillakaratne Dilshan and "champion" Muttiah Muralitharan for firing his team into the World Cup quarter-finals.

Man-of-the-match Dilshan scored 144 runs off 131 balls as part of an opening stand of 282 with Upul Tharanga, helping his side to a challenging 327-6 against Zimbabwe in Pallekele.

When Sangakkara threw him the ball in the Zimbabwe innings, Dilshan returned the astonishing figures of 4-4, only missing out on a hat-trick because Mahela Jayawardene dropped a regulation chance at slip.

Muralitharan, playing his final match in front of his home fans in Kandy before his international retirement, broke Zimbabwe's dangerous opening partnership, dismissing Regis Chakabva (35).

He finished with 3-34 as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 188 to give Sri Lanka a 139-run win.

"It's great to play at home. This is where I'm from and it's a magnificent ground, very picturesque and a fitting tribute to Murali," said Sangakkara.

"We managed to cover all areas and with that opening stand managed to put the match beyond the Zimbabweans," he said.

Speaking about Dilshan, the skipper said: "He's got that magic touch with the bat, with the ball and even on the field so he's been one of most important players over the last 10 years.

"And today again he showed how well he can come back from quite a couple of tough weeks for him."

Speaking about the performance of Muralitharan, the highest wicket-taker in ODIs and Tests, Sangakkara said: "He's a champion and that's why he's always rated the best in the world. When the tough times come along he steps up."

"I think for Murali this last game would hold very happy memories."

Muralitharan himself said he was happy with the way Sri Lanka came back after not bowling well at the start of the Zimbabwe innings, adding: "(Brendan) Taylor (80) played well but I think we came back strong.

"It's a sad moment for me but a happy moment for the team because we've qualified for the next round," he said, referring to his last game in Kandy.

Dilshan said it had been a good pitch to bat on and he was relieved to make a big score once set.

"I'm really disappointed that for a few matches I got the start but didn't capitalise," he said, adding he was positive about Sri Lanka's chances in the tournament.

Disappointed Zimbabwe skipper Elton Chigumbura praised his opening batsmen.

"Taylor and Chakabva played well in the first 20 overs. I thought we were in the game from there but I guess you need skill to chase 325."

"We just have to take the positives and learn from what we did wrong and hopefully we'll put it into practice in the next game," he added.

New Zealand Blitzes Pakistan at Cricket World Cup; England's Broad Is Out

New Zealand Batsman Ross Taylor

Ross Taylor smashed a career-best 131 as New Zealand beat Pakistan by 110 runs to move atop their group at the Cricket World Cup.

New Zealand hit 100 runs from the last five overs to finish at 302-7 in Kandy, Sri Lanka, yesterday. Taylor struck 62 from 16 balls and Jacob Oram 25 from 9. Pakistan lost four early wickets on its way to 192 all out in reply.

Taylor, who was dropped on 8 by wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal, celebrated his 27th birthday by finishing not out in his 124- ball innings as New Zealand went atop Group A with six points, ahead of Pakistan on run rate. The top four teams in each seven- team group move to the quarterfinals.

“I had a bit of luck early on which I put down to my birthday but towards the end there I hit a few boundaries which was pretty sweet,” Taylor said at the post-match presentation. “One of our strengths is the power we have down the bottom and it showed today.”

Fast bowlers Tim Southee and Kyle Mills backed up the power hitting by reducing Pakistan to 45-5 inside 15 overs, a position from which the 1992 world champion never recovered. Southee finished with 3-25, while Mills took 2-43.

Pakistan, which also has six points from four matches, was the only nation with a perfect record at this year’s tournament before yesterday. Co-host India faces the Netherlands in today’s Group B match in New Delhi.

Injured Bowlers

New Zealand’s victory was tempered by an injury to Black Caps captain Daniel Vettori, who hurt his right knee while attempting a catch early during Pakistan’s innings. Vettori, the team’s front-line spinner, didn’t return to the field.

“Hopefully it’s just a bit of jarring,” Taylor said. “He’s key to our team and we need him for the rest of the tournament.”

England lost its second player in as many day when seam bowler Stuart Broad was ruled out of the rest of the competition because of a side strain.

Broad, 24, sustained the injury during England’s six-run win over South Africa three days ago, when he took 4-15 to help secure the victory. He’ll return to the U.K. from India for treatment, the England and Wales Cricket Board said.

“This is a new injury, separate from the abdominal tear suffered during the Ashes, that requires a period of recuperation and rehabilitation,” Nick Peirce, the ECB’s chief medical officer, said in the statement.

A replacement player for Broad is yet to be chosen, though Chris Tremlett is on standby with the squad.

Batsman Kevin Pietersen left the team two days ago to undergo surgery on a hernia and has been replaced by Eoin Morgan.

India beat Netherlands to top Group B, World cup 2011 Update

India continued their dominance in this year's World Cup and are well on their to qualify for the quarterfinals after beating Netherlands by 5 wickets at Feroz Shah Kotla. But the low scoring contest was anything but a one sided affair.

The Dutch made a good start after winning the toss and opting to bat first. Their openers Eric Szwarczynski and Wesley Barresi put together a 56 run partnership before it was broken in the 17th over when Szwarczynski was castled by Piyush Chawla. A few overs later, Yuvraj Singh, who was brilliant against Ireland in their last match, claimed his first wicket of the day when he dismissed Barresi, LBW. Barresi felt he was unfairly judged and sought a third opinion through a review but the third umpire agreed with umpire Davis on the field.

Yuvraj's second victim was the dangerous Ryan ten Doeschate who attempted to attack a slow one only to heave it to long off into the hands of Zaheer Khan. At 99-3, Netherlands were in all sorts of trouble and things got worse when they lost two more wickets in the succeeding over. Tom Cooper, the set batsman, was caught behind when he edged a fuller delivery from Ashish Nehra. New man Bas Zuiderent was the next to depart after being struck square on the pads by a reverse swinging delivery from Zaheer. It took another referral to finally send him back to the pavilion and with half their batters gone, the Dutch needed some magic to post a competitive total.

This magic came from Peter Borren who together with Mudassar Bukhari helped their side get close to the 200 run mark. But a superb last spell from Zaheer saw him take out both the batsmen to conclude the Dutch innings in the forty-seventh over, 11 runs short of 200.

In response, openers Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag gave India a brisk start and it looked like the game would be over sooner than expected. But Netherlands made a major breakthrough in the eighth over when Sehwag (39) was caught by Kervezee at cover, off Pieter Seelaar.

Seelaar then went on to dismiss Tendulkar (27) and new man Yusuf Pathan (11) in the same over to cause a mild panic in the Indian camp. And when Kohli (12) departed after being clean bowled by Borren in the 15th over, Netherlands could see a glimmer of hope. But then Gambhir and Yuvraj dug in and put together 40 runS before the former was castled by Bukhari in the 24th over. This brought the Indian skipper in the middle who partnered with Yuvraj to take India through with 81 balls to spare. And while doing so, Yuvraj hit another well calculated half century which won him another 'Man of the Match' honour.

Brief Scores: India 191-5 (Yuvraj 51, Sehwag 39; Seelaar 3-53) beat Netherlands 189 all-out in 46.4 overs (Borren 38, Cooper 29; Zaheer 3-20) by 5 wickets with 81 balls remaining.
