India register first win on tour of England 26 August 2011

HOVE, August 25, 2011 (AFP) - India lifted the gloom after their crushing Test series defeat against England by warming up for the forthcoming one-day internationals with a six-wicket victory over Sussex at Hove on Thursday.

The Indians lost all four Tests against England, but they showed no signs of a hangover as Parthiv Patel, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma hit half-centuries to secure a first win of the tour.

India, who play further one-day matches against Kent and Leicestershire, reached a Duckworth-Lewis adjusted target of 235 in 45 overs with 4.1 overs to spare and will hope the momentum from this victory can provide some impetus as they prepare for the one-day matches against England, which begin with a Twenty20 clash on August 31.

After India won the toss and elected to bowl, Sussex threatened to post an imposing total thanks to useful contributions from Joe Gatting, Matt Machan and Ben Brown.

But they subsided dramatically after Brown mistimed a slog at Munaf Patel in the 43rd over, losing their last five wickets for 18 runs in 19 balls as RP Singh finished with four for 45.

India included five members of their World Cup-winning side, and Sachin Tendulkar and Patel began confidently enough with a stand of 41 in 7.4 overs before left-armer Chris Liddle foxed Tendulkar with a slower ball which was driven to mid-off.

Patel is anxious to press his claims for a role in the forthcoming one-day series and played attractively for his 55 off 65 balls, including nine fours, before Sussex skipper Chris Nash turned one past him with his first delivery.

Nash and leg-spinner Will Beer occasionally got some sharp turn from a worn pitch but the impressive Kohli and Sharma, who hit two fifties during the one-day series against West Indies in June, improved their chances of facing England in a stand of 104 in 17.5 overs.

Kohli hit six fours and a six off Naved Arif in his 71 in 83 balls before driving to mid-on, but India needed just 27 to win when he departed and Sharma eased to an unbeaten 61 from 65 balls with eight fours and a six.

Desaster Performance - England complete India whitewash

London, August 22 (AFP): England sealed a 4-0 series rout of India with an innings and eight-run victory at The Oval here on Monday as Sachin Tendulkar fell just short of an unprecedented 100th international hundred.

India, who needed 291 runs to make the hosts bat again, frustrated England during a fourth-wicket partnership of 144 between Tendulkar, who made 91, and Amit Mishra.

But when Mishra was out for a Test-best 84, it was the start of a collapse that saw India lose seven wickets for 21 runs on the way to 283 all out.

Off-spinner Graeme Swann, at last presented with a pitch taking turn this series, did the bulk of the damage with six for 106 to the delight of the majority of a sell-out 23,500 crowd.

It was the first time England had swept a four-match series since a 4-0 home whitewash of the West Indies in 2004.

India resumed on Monday's fifth and final day on 129 for three, still 162 runs shy of England's first innings 591 for six declared featuring Ian Bell's Test-best 235 and Kevin Pietersen's 175.

Tendulkar was 25 not out and Mishra eight not out.

England, who'd replaced India at the top of the ICC's Test Championship table with an innings and 242 run victory at Edgbaston last time out, endured a wicketless morning session.

But Tendulkar, whose previous best score this series was 56 in the second Test at Trent Bridge, should have been out for 70 when Alastair Cook at short leg dropped a bat-pad catch off Swann.

There was further frustration for Swann and England when Tendulkar was dropped by Prior on 85.

But Swann made the breakthrough an increasingly anxious England wanted when Mishra, playing for turn that never came, was bowled, having easily surpassed his previous Test-best of 50 against Bangladesh in Chittagong last year.

It was another fine effort with the bat by Mishra who made 43 in a first innings 300 featuring Rahul Dravid's 146 not out after taking no wickets for a hugely expensive 170 runs with his leg-spinners.

Tendulkar though seemed set to complete his ton of tons.

But nine runs short the 38-year-old was lbw to seamer Tim Bresnan.

Australian umpire Rod Tucker took his time before raising his finger, with replays indicating the ball would have just clipped the top of leg stump.

Tendulkar, walked off to a standing ovation after his best score of the series, topping his 57 in the second Test at Trent Bridge.

He batted for nearly four hours, facing 172 balls with 11 fours.

Wickets then tumbled in quick succession, with Suresh Raina lbw to Swann to complete a 42-ball pair before India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni drove loosely at Stuart Broad, armed with the new ball and was well caught by Swann in the slips for three.

RP Singh was caught behind for a duck off Broad.

Swann then had Gautam Gambhir caught in the gully before ending the match by bowling last man Shanthakumaran Sreesanth.

Raina bags longest duck by Indian batsmen

Suresh Raina is in the news for all the wrong reasons.

Under-pressure after aggregating only 105 runs in six innings of the previous three Tests against England [ Images ], Raina batted for 39 minutes and faced 29 balls before returning to the pavilion without opening his account.

He now shares the dubious distinction of recording the longest duck by an Indian batsman.

Irfan Pathan [ Images ] also has a 29-ball duck against his name, against Pakistan at Bangalore in 2004-05.

Can India retain their No #1 Ranking in test?

Can India retain their No #1 Ranking in test?

What do u think if performance like ongoing series against Eng Can they hold their status as # 1 test team in world cricket?

Its a tough series & injuries are not helping team India's cause but can't take anything away from a solid English performance in the 1st test. Maybe 2nd test is also not going to go their way. If & when full squad is available for selection, can we think of taking on a rampaging Eng properly. Till then team has to ensure that they don't fall far too behind.

We hope for a better performance from team India & its not that Eng would become invincible, once they attain no.1. India can always take that position back with good performances in Aus & other future matches. Its one thing getting to no.1 but its altogether another matter to maintain it & India has done credit to its no.1 position, no one thought that they would last this long.
